Aden Mount's Holiday to St. Anne's 2009St Anne’s Holiday 2009

The holiday took place on 17th to 21st August 2009. We left Aden Mount at 11am and arrived in St Anne’s at 12.30pm. The first nurse on duty followed us in her own car. We all arrived at the hotel at the same time. On arrival we were allocated our rooms. As arranged a small fridge had been put in one of the bedrooms for insulin.

After a light lunch we looked around the hotel to get our bearings and unpacked. Later that afternoon we had an ice cream by the pier and enjoyed sitting in the sunshine. We then returned to the hotel and changed for the evening meal and entertainment. We had a lovely evening listening to a singer before going to bed.

On Tuesday morning we looked round the local shops and café’s. The spar pool was free in the afternoon so two residents took advantage of it and had a great time. After the evening meal we enjoyed listening to a different singer and had a good night. The second nurse on duty arrived for 9pm allowing the first to leave after hand over.

Aden Mount's Holiday to St. Anne's 2009I had booked a trip to the Sea Life centre and Wax Works Museum on Wednesday morning. The hotel provided wheelchair access transport. We all enjoyed the day with the exception of one carer and one resident who were frightened of fish! As they shot round ASAP the rest of us took photos and enjoyed the experience. The third nurse arrived in the afternoon feeling very proud of herself. (She had driven all the way on the motorway) We all gave her a round of applause and told her how clever she was before waving goodbye to “nurse two”. Again the evening was spent in the hotel bar watching the entertainment.

Aden Mount's Holiday to St. Anne's 2009The weather was not good on Thursday morning which was disappointing as I had booked the hotel transport to Blackpool Zoo. At breakfast we were all in agreement to carry on the day as planned. We were all glad we had because the sun began to shine and a good time was had by all. We all loved looking at the animals and bought some souvenirs from the gift shop. When we returned to the hotel we decided we would have just enough time to have another dip in the pool. So we quickly changed into our costumes and took three residents for a swim.

After the evening meal we went into the hotel bar and sang along with the singer. All was going well until the realisation that tomorrow was home time slowly dawned on one of the residents and she started to get upset. (Bottom lip like a door step) this had a knock on effect with another resident and set her off as well! All this commotion stopped the singer in her tracks and she came over to apologise in case it was her singing that was to blame. After a tearful resident told her it was because they didn’t want to go home the singer was determined to make it a party night. Everyone ended up on the dance floor making fools of themselves and having a fantastic last night.

Friday morning arrived and nobody wanted to leave. We had breakfast then finished packing. The taxi arrived at 10.30am and we arrived back at Aden Mount for 12.30pm. Lunch had been saved for the residents so as they went to the dinning room their luggage was taken to their rooms. Over one hundred photos were taken while on holiday so we have now put them up on the wall in the therapy room and made a nice display for all to see.

I believe the holiday has been a great success and enriched the lives of the five residents as well as myself, the carer and the three nurses. From a staff point of view it was nice to be able to spend quality time with a small group and devote time to them.
